Family Portraits

So you're thinking about having your family captured in a photograph, great!
Family photos are so important!
We would love to help you create something wonderful for your family home.
Here are some things to think about before your shoot.

Where do we have photos taken?

Outside
There might be a couple of reasons why you would like your session to be outside.
It's Sunny
It's Fun
You want something more casual or natural.
You might have a place locally that is significant to your family..
There are heaps of fantastic outdoor locations around Dunedin, the railway station, the beach, various gardens and parks.
Another thing to consider is the time of year, autumn has some beautiful colours, spring everything is out in bloom.
Winter the light has more contrast and summer is warmer and the light is softer.

The Studio
There might be a couple of reasons why you would like your
session to be in the studio.
It's warm, It's quiet
You can be photographed in any weather.
No one will be there apart from your family members and the photographer
You might have little ones that are only just sitting up or crawling.
You are after a more traditional family photo.

We have a couple of different background options in the studio.
You may want to dress according to which background you would like.

What do I wear?
What you wear is key for a successful portrait session.
Clothing compliments who you are as a family, speaks to the environment in which
the photos are taking place, and coordinates with the home where the final images
will be displayed.

Your style should be as unique as your family so we've put together some clothing
advice for a creative, comfortable session:

-Avoid baggy clothes; these can be very unflattering in photos.
-Wear colours that go together not necessarily matching, think similar tones.
-Avoid big bold prints, logos and blocks of bright colours, these can be very
distracting in your finished images.
-Think about what's on your feet too.
-You should all stand in front of the mirror together and see if anyone's outfit
stands out more than everyone else's.

Make up is important too, if you don't normally wear a lot then don't cake it on
for the sake of a photo. At the end of the day you want to look like yourself.

With your hair, just make sure your fringe is clear of your eyes and your happy
with your current haircut.

If you can't decide between a couple of different tops or pairs of glasses etc,
bring them both we can always try both in the photos.

What do you want as a finished product?
Now is also a great time to think about how you would like to present your
images in your home.

Do you have a space above the fireplace you would love to have a family photo hanging?
or a hallway you would love to turn into a family photo gallery space?

We have a great selection of sizes available and custom framing so you can
choose just the right style frame for your photo.
